Heritage Home Service provides professional excavation and underground pipe services to homeowners across Maine. When a plumbing problem lies beneath the surface — a collapsed sewer line, a failed water service line, or a damaged underground drain — getting to it safely and efficiently requires the right equipment, the right expertise, and a team that understands the unique challenges of working in Maine’s rocky, frost-prone ground.

We handle the full scope of underground pipe work: diagnosis, excavation, repair or replacement, and site restoration. Homeowners in Maine do not need to coordinate multiple contractors for a buried pipe job. Heritage manages the entire process from start to finish..

When Is Excavation Necessary?

Trenchless methods have become the preferred approach for many underground pipe repairs, and Heritage offers them wherever they are appropriate. But there are situations where traditional open excavation is the right — and sometimes the only — solution. Understanding when excavation is necessary helps homeowners set realistic expectations from the start.

Excavation is typically required when:

Underground Pipe Services Heritage Provides in Maine

Heritage handles a full range of underground pipe work for Maine homeowners and properties. Our licensed plumbers and excavation crew work together to diagnose underground problems accurately, execute the repair efficiently, and restore the site properly when the job is complete

Sewer Line Excavation and Replacement

When a sewer line cannot be repaired trenchlessly — due to collapse, severe displacement, or the extent of deterioration — full excavation and replacement is the appropriate path. Our crew excavates along the line, removes the damaged pipe, installs new PVC pipe at the correct grade, and backfills and compacts the trench properly to minimize settling.

We take care with every excavation project to protect the surrounding property as much as possible — working carefully around trees, stone walls, and gardens, minimizing the footprint of the dig, and completing surface restoration to leave the site in good condition.

Water Service Line Repair and Replacement

The water service line is the pipe that runs from the municipal water main at the street to your home’s interior plumbing. When a water service line develops a leak, corrodes through, or fails, it must be accessed and repaired or replaced. In most Maine homes, this line runs several feet underground — well below the frost line — which means excavation is required.

Signs of a failing water service line include a sudden drop in water pressure throughout the home, unexplained wet areas in the yard between the house and the street, an unexpectedly high water bill, or discolored water indicating pipe corrosion. Heritage diagnoses water service line problems accurately before recommending excavation, and we complete the repair with minimal disruption to your property.

Underground Drain Line Repair and Installation

Underground drain lines route water away from your foundation, yard, and home. French drains, perimeter drains, and footing drains all rely on buried pipe that can crack, collapse, or become clogged over time — particularly in Maine’s demanding freeze-thaw environment. When these systems fail, water finds its way into basements and crawl spaces instead of being directed safely away.

Heritage repairs and replaces failed underground drain systems and installs new drainage solutions where needed. This work often goes hand-in-hand with sump pump installation and basement waterproofing efforts.

Clean-Out Installation

A sewer clean-out is an access point that allows a plumber to enter the sewer line with a camera or cleaning equipment without having to go through a toilet or interior fixture. Many older Maine homes lack proper clean-out access, which complicates every future service call.

Heritage can excavate to install a properly placed clean-out fitting during any underground pipe project, or as a standalone service. It is a smart investment that makes every future drain and sewer service call faster, easier, and less expensive.

How Heritage Approaches Every Excavation Project

Underground pipe work requires careful planning before the first shovel breaks ground. Here is how Heritage approaches every excavation project in Maine:

  1. Thorough diagnosis first. We use sewer camera inspection, pipe locating equipment, and ground-penetrating methods as appropriate to understand exactly what is underground before we dig. We do not excavate blindly.
  2. Utility marking. Before any excavation begins, we coordinate with Dig Safe to have all underground utilities — gas, electric, water, telecommunications — located and marked across the Maine service area. This is a legal requirement and a critical safety step on every job.
  3. Precise, controlled excavation. Our crew works carefully to open only what is necessary. We minimize the excavation footprint and protect surrounding landscaping, hardscaping, and structures as much as the job allows.
  4. Quality pipe installation. We install new pipe to the correct grade, at the appropriate depth for Maine frost conditions, using materials rated for underground use and long service life.
  5. Proper backfill and compaction. How a trench is backfilled matters enormously. Improperly compacted backfill settles over time, creating depressions in the yard and potentially stressing the new pipe. Heritage backfills in layers and compacts properly to minimize settling.
  6. Surface restoration. We restore the surface above the excavation as part of every project — raking and seeding disturbed lawn areas, replacing removed sod where practical, and coordinating concrete or asphalt restoration when driveways or walkways are affected.

Working in Maine Soil and Frost Conditions

Maine’s soil varies considerably across the state — from the sandy, well-draining soils of the coastal regions to the rocky ledge and clay-heavy ground common across inland and central Maine. Our crews are experienced working in all of it, and we adjust our approach based on what we encounter. Rocky ledge, in particular, is a defining feature of excavation work in much of Maine.

Frost depth in Maine is among the deepest in New England, ranging from approximately 48 to 72 inches or more depending on the region and elevation. All water-bearing pipes must be installed below the frost line to prevent freezing. Heritage ensures every underground installation meets or exceeds Maine frost depth requirements so you are not dealing with frozen pipes in a newly installed line years down the road.

Rocky soil and ledge — common throughout much of Maine — can significantly complicate excavation and add time to underground pipe projects. We assess soil conditions as part of our site evaluation and provide honest project timelines based on what we find, rather than an optimistic estimate that ignores the ground we will actually be digging through.

Permits and Regulations for Underground Pipe Work in Maine

Most underground pipe work in Maine requires permits from the local municipality and, in some cases, coordination with the water or sewer district. Projects near wetlands or within shoreland zones may require additional state-level review. Heritage handles the permitting process as part of every project. We pull all required permits, schedule required inspections, and ensure all work is performed to code.

Do not hire a contractor who suggests skipping permits for underground pipe work. Unpermitted work creates problems when you sell your home, can void your homeowner’s insurance coverage for related claims, and leaves you without the protection of a required inspection confirming the work was done correctly.

FAQs

  • How long does an underground pipe excavation project take?

Timeline varies based on the length of the line, soil conditions, and the scope of the repair. A straightforward sewer line excavation on a standard residential lot typically takes two to three days. More complex projects involving rocky ledge, deep pipe, or significant surface restoration may take longer — Maine’s ground conditions frequently add time to a dig.

  • Will excavation damage my yard permanently?

Not if it is done right. Heritage restores excavated areas as part of every project. Lawn areas are regraded and reseeded, and while some settling is normal over the first year, the result should be a yard that is largely indistinguishable from its pre-excavation condition within a growing season or two.

  • Can Heritage handle the entire project — excavation, pipe work, and restoration — without me hiring separate contractors?

Yes. Heritage manages the full scope of underground pipe projects from initial diagnosis through final restoration. You work with one team and one point of contact throughout the project.

When my AC quit suddenly, Heritage came in a timely fashion and did an excellent job. The four gentlemen who helped me were professional and knowledgeable. Joe diagnosed the problem and was very thorough in explaining the cost of repair versus replacement. Bobby, Harrison and the electrician Liam did the replacement and were wonderful to work with. They explained the process carefully, answered all my questions and completed the job efficiently and quickly. I would certainly call the company again for any HVAC, plumbing or electrical needs. Thanks Heritage!

First time using Heritage, as two other plumbers I’ve used in the past gave me long lead times. Heritage answered my call personally, and scheduled me same day-amazing considering it was a Saturday! I had a leaking outdoor spigot, and given the drought, waiting a week to fix it was out of the question. The technician sent out, James Shallow, could not have been more professional, knowledgeable and personable. He showed up on time, did the job seamlessly and without issue. He spent time educating us as to how to avoid this problem in the future, and it was a genuinely pleasant experience. I will most definitely use & recommend Heritage again (request Jimmy).

Alex came to fix a water main leak at my home which was pre-manufactured in the late eighties. He found and fixed the leak quickly. After the job was complete I spoke with him about the cause because this is the third time in a year with a leak. He spent the time with me explaining the material used for piping in my place and checked the water pressure. The pressure was on the high end and we both concluded between pressure spikes and old plastic pipes. I asked for an estimate to replace all the pipes. He was able to give me an estimate on the spot and found financing with very reasonable terms. Two days later Heritage Home Services was here with two trucks and completely changed out the piping in a day. In short. This place answers the phone. Gets technician on the job quickly. Great knowledge. Cleaned thoroughly before leaving.

I’ve dealt with Heritage for many years because of their dependability. They are not the cheapest, for sure, but if you need a plumbing or HVAC system installed or serviced/repaired, there’s none better. I needed repairs to be done on slim duct covers that were damaged after having siding installed on my home. I called Heritage because they were the company that installed the original mini-split system in my house several years earlier. John Lindonen and another technician (unfortunately, I don’t remember his name) showed up as committed and did the repair work. They were very thorough, explaining every issue to me and answered all of my questions. They were polite, and extremely knowledgeable. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend these guys to my family or friends.

However, Camile arrived and spent time discussing my points and activities performed, helped me tremendously and ultimately didn’t need service. He was professional, informative, and transparent so Heritage, please acknowledge his great service!
