If you’re looking to improve your home’s indoor air quality beyond what a standard HVAC filter can provide, an active air scrubber may be the right solution. Heritage Home Service installs whole-home air scrubber systems throughout Massachusetts, helping homeowners reduce airborne contaminants, odors, and other indoor pollutants while supporting cleaner air throughout the home.
Unlike traditional air filters that passively capture particles as air moves through your HVAC system, active air scrubbers work differently. They use advanced purification technology installed directly within your heating and cooling system to actively treat the air circulating through your home.
Whether you’re concerned about seasonal allergies, pet odors, cooking smells, or overall indoor air quality, Heritage Home Service can recommend the right indoor air quality solution for your home.
What Is an Active Air Scrubber?
An active air scrubber is an in-duct air purification system that integrates with your home’s existing HVAC equipment.
Rather than relying solely on a furnace filter to capture airborne particles, an active air scrubber uses advanced purification technology within the HVAC system to help reduce certain airborne contaminants and odors as conditioned air circulates throughout the home.
Because the system is installed inside the ductwork, it operates automatically whenever your heating or cooling system runs.
Active Air Scrubbers vs. Traditional Air Filters
Many homeowners assume that replacing their HVAC filter is enough to improve indoor air quality.
While quality air filters remain an important part of any HVAC system, they perform a different job than an active air scrubber.
Traditional HVAC Filters
Standard filters are considered passive filtration.
They work by capturing dust and airborne particles as air passes through the filter.
Depending on the filter type, they may help reduce:
- Dust
- Lint
- Pollen
- Pet dander
- Larger airborne particles
Even high-efficiency filters only treat the air that passes through them.
Active Air Scrubber Technology
An active air scrubber works differently.
Rather than simply waiting for contaminants to reach a filter, ActivePure® technology generates purification molecules within the HVAC system that circulate with conditioned air while the equipment operates.
This active approach is what distinguishes air scrubbers from traditional filtration systems.
Benefits of Installing an Air Scrubber
Adding an air scrubber to your home’s HVAC system may provide several advantages.
Potential benefits include:
- Fresher indoor air
- Reduced household odors
- Improved indoor air quality
- Whole-home air treatment
- Quiet operation
- Fully integrated installation
- No portable equipment to move from room to room
Because the system works through your existing HVAC equipment, purification occurs throughout the home rather than in just one room.
Who Can Benefit From an Air Scrubber?
Air scrubbers can be a valuable addition for many households, particularly those concerned about indoor air quality.
They are commonly installed in homes with:
- Family members affected by seasonal allergies
- Pets
- Cooking odors
- Musty smells
- Newly renovated spaces
- High indoor occupancy
- General indoor air quality concerns
Our team evaluates your home’s HVAC system and indoor air quality goals before recommending equipment.
Installed Directly Into Your HVAC System
Unlike portable air purifiers, whole-home air scrubbers are installed directly into your heating and cooling system.
This allows the purification technology to work alongside your HVAC equipment without taking up additional living space.
Installation typically includes:
- HVAC system evaluation
- Equipment compatibility review
- Professional installation
- Performance testing
- System operation overview
Once installed, the system operates automatically whenever your HVAC equipment is running.
Professional Installation Matters
Proper installation helps ensure your air scrubber performs as intended.
At Heritage Home Service, our technicians evaluate:
- HVAC system compatibility
- Airflow
- Equipment sizing
- Electrical connections
- Installation location
Professional installation also helps protect manufacturer warranty coverage and long-term system reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Scrubbers
-
What is the difference between an air scrubber and an HVAC filter?
An HVAC filter passively captures particles as air moves through the system, while an active air scrubber uses installed purification technology to actively treat circulating air during HVAC operation.
-
Can an air scrubber be installed on my existing HVAC system?
Many air scrubbers are designed to integrate with existing central heating and cooling systems. Our technicians can determine compatibility during your consultation.
-
Is an air scrubber the same as a portable air purifier?
No. A portable air purifier treats the air in a single room, while a whole-home air scrubber is installed within your HVAC system to work throughout the home.
-
Will an air scrubber replace my HVAC filter?
No. Your HVAC filter remains an important part of your heating and cooling system. An air scrubber is designed to complement, not replace, proper filtration.
-
How often does an air scrubber require maintenance?
Maintenance requirements vary by manufacturer and model. During installation, our technicians will explain recommended service intervals and any replacement components your system may require.
