How Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers Work

Whole home humidity control systems should not be confused with other equipment like air conditioners or air filtration systems. Here’s a quick breakdown of the two types of systems available to homeowners:

• Humidifiers: Whole home humidifiers are dedicated systems that add humidity (moisture) to the air through the use of existing ductwork from your furnace, or by use of a ductless steam system. You’ll want a humidifier if you find yourself cranking your heating system up no matter what the thermostat reads, or deal with the aggravation of dry/itchy skin and static electricity. Low humidity can also cause damage to sensitive wood furniture and musical instruments.
• Dehumidifiers: While it’s true that air conditioners do remove humidity from your indoor air as an essential part of keeping you comfortable, they are not dedicated air drying systems. Likewise, while a dehumidifier acts similar to an air conditioning system by passing air over a cold refrigerant coil to capture condensation; it is designed to handle moisture removal much more effectively. If you deal with mold build-up, feelings of being muggy or clammy even when the air is cool, or just general discomfort while indoors, a whole home dehumidifier may be right for you.

Regardless of what you need, both devices can be controlled by their own type of specialized control called a humidistat. This allows you to read the indoor humidity and automatically set it to the level you find most comfortable, just like your thermostat.

Depending on your surroundings (such as elevation, nearby water sources, sunlight exposure, etc.), your seasonal humidity levels can fluctuate, and it may not always be when you expect. Humidity in New Hampshire tends to drop in the colder months, with spikes of high humidity in the summer, however, if you already have an air conditioning system such as ductless or central AC, your unit actually removes moisture from the air when cooling.
